Group A streptococcus is a bacterial infection that can affect both adults and children, causing sore throat and other complications if left untreated. Because early detection is essential to prevent the spread of this infection, treatment must begin quickly.
Symptoms
Group A streptococcal infection may present with fever, pain when swallowing, tender lymph nodes and a severe sore throat that appears suddenly. If you experience these symptoms, you may be eligible for a rapid detection test.
Services offered
Services are provided by appointment only at local service points (screening) in Bas-Saint-Laurent. During your appointment, nursing staff will conduct a clinical assessment to confirm that you are eligible for the service. If you meet the criteria, a throat swab will be taken and analyzed on site. If the sample tests positive for Group A streptococcus, you will receive a prescription for antibiotics.
Eligibility
The service is available to children aged 3 and older and adults who have symptoms.
