Visual impairment

Visual impairment services are intended for people of all ages in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region who have low vision or are functionally blind.

A service offering adapted to needs

To address the everyday needs of users, families and loved ones, the service offering for visual impairment aims to provide compensation for disabilities and develop the skills needed to use compensation strategies.

What are the objectives?

  • The development of the person’s abilities
  • Compensation for their limitations through training in the use of visual aids, communication aids and mobility aids
  • Reducing physical and social barriers present in their environment 
  • Learning new strategies to adapt to the situation
     

Services offered for visual impairment

These services are offered in most follow-ups:

  • Needs assessment
  • Oculo-visual examination
  • Prescription, provision or adjustment of ophthalmic corrections
  • Functional assessment of vision, communication and mobility
  • Provision of visual aids and other assistive devices, and training in their use
  • Visual stimulation
  • Training in safe mobility
  • Training in activities of daily living
  • Psychosocial support

When needed, individuals will be referred to complementary resources from school, professional, community and other settings.

How to access services

Intake, analysis, guidance, and referral services (AAOR) is the main entry point to the CISSS du Bas-Saint-Laurent for CLSC service requests. This service receives your request, reviews it, directs it to the appropriate service or refers you to the appropriate agency according to your needs. To access this service (in French).
