Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy for adults
Physiotherapy services are offered in all hospitals in the Bas-Saint-Laurent. The outpatient physiotherapy service is for users who are able to travel to receive their treatments. The sessions are short term (acute phase, less than 6 months) and provide functional recovery while preventing deterioration or complications.
Physiotherapy professionals, physiotherapists and physiotherapy technologists offer services that focus on health promotion, prevention, physical health, and orthopedic pre- and post-surgery.
Eligibility criteria for physiotherapy services
Your doctor must submit a medical referral with a diagnosis that qualifies for the outpatient rehabilitation service at your hospital.
Once the referral has been received, a healthcare professional will assess your condition using a prioritization grid. Your name will then be put on a waiting list and you will be informed of the operating rules for these services.
At any time, you can contact the outpatient physiotherapy department if your situation deteriorates. A professional will reassess your condition.
For the contact information of the hospital centre, consult the section on where to obtain services and select “Centres hospitaliers”. Contact information for services is indicated below each hospital centre.

Youth physiotherapy
Pediatric physiotherapy offers preventive and curative services for children aged 0 to 8.
The physiotherapist in the youth program has a specialized approach for various motor development problems in children. They also treat musculoskeletal problems for children up to the age of 8 (e.g., plagiocephaly, twisted neck). Musculoskeletal problems in children over the age of 8 are referred to the hospital centre’s outpatient clinic.
Initially, in the presence of the parents, the physiotherapist evaluates the child. They identify the problem, issue a clinical impression and develop a treatment plan to respond to the targeted objectives.
In all cases, the physiotherapist proposes an activity program tailored to the child’s needs. Parents can actively participate in the meetings and develop skills to better stimulate their child at home.
Regardless of the treatment chosen, active therapy or follow-up sessions, the physiotherapist helps the child improve their physical capacities and develop harmonious mobility by supporting them in their home and daycare environment.
Often, collaboration with other disciplines complements the physiotherapy intervention for the child.
