Postnatal follow-ups

After delivery, you’ll require follow-up with health professionals to ensure you’re recovering well and that your baby is healthy. An appointment needs to be booked for a consultation six weeks after the delivery of your baby with the doctor who followed you during your pregnancy. If you had a cesarian section, the follow-up will be provided by the obstetrics clinic at the hospital where you delivered. This consultation is to verify that your genital organs have repositioned and regained their form, and that your cesarian wound is healing properly. If you have any problems, don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor during this appointment. At any time, if you’re not feeling well, you can call Info-Santé/Info-Social at 811.

Postnatal visit by a nurse

To ensure continuity of care and services, the team at the hospital where you delivered your baby automatically informs the perinatal nurses of your return home. This information is sent to the CLSC in your region the day of your discharge from hospital.

A nurse will contact you 24 to 72 hours after your return home to schedule a home visit.

The nurse can also answer your and your spouse’s questions to help ease your adjustment to your new role as parents. If you’re breastfeeding, the nurse can provide you with support and continue the visits based on your needs.

Follow-up by a midwife

Your midwife will provide postnatal follow-up for you and your newborn. To learn more, visit the midwifery services section.

If your baby does not have a family doctor or a specialized nurse practitioner (SNP)

  • Talk to your health professional
If you have a family doctor or SNP, find out if this person can provide your child with care.

If the first option is not possible :

  • Register your child with the Family Doctor Finder (GAMF)
Upon receipt of your child’s health insurance card, register them for the GAMF wait list so that they can eventually be assigned a family doctor or SNP. The wait time will depend on the level of priority and the availability of the resources in your sector. To register: online ou by phone

Until your child has a doctor or SNP:

  • Book an appointment at the CLSC for your child’s development follow-up (ABCdaire)
This health follow-up is to assess your child’s overall health, their growth and development. Conducted at the same time as the appointments for their vaccination, this service is offered to your child at 2 months, 4 months, 6 months (no vaccination), 12 months, 18 months and 24 months (no vaccination). This follow-up is offered even if you choose to not vaccinate your child.

To book an appointment: Clic Santé under Pregnancy and pediatrics > Pediatrics - Consultation and choose the service with the option “ABCdaire.”

Where to consult

  • Call 911 or go to Emergency

If your child has a non-urgent health problem:

  • Call 811, option 1 (Info-Santé: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week)
A priority line for the parents of children between 0 and 17 years of age is available. You can promptly talk to a nurse, who will assess your child and advise you on care you can provide at home. The GAP allows people who do not have a family doctor to obtain a medical appointment or health services.
