What is bowel surgery?
Bowel surgery is performed to treat various health problems affecting the colon, rectum or small intestine. These procedures aim to improve your quality of life by correcting specific medical conditions.
Why is bowel surgery performed?
The main conditions that may lead to bowel surgery include:
Diverticulitis
Inflammation or infection of diverticula (small pouches in the intestinal wall) may require surgery to remove the affected portion of the intestine.
Inflammatory bowel diseases
Conditions such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis may require surgery to remove severely affected areas.
Neoplasia (polyps, tumours, etc.)
The presence of polyps, benign tumors or colorectal cancer may require surgery to remove the affected section of the intestine and prevent the progression of the disease.
Stoma
A stoma may be created temporarily or permanently to divert stool through an opening in the abdomen. This may be necessary because of complications or chronic disease.
