What is a knee arthroplasty?
Total knee replacement is a surgical procedure that involves removing the damaged parts of your knee and replacing them with artificial implants made of polyethylene (plastic and metal) that are fixed to the bone. The prosthesis is designed to match your body’s anatomy. Measurements are taken to ensure the prosthesis is the correct size. The goal of the surgery is to reduce pain and improve mobility.

What is a hip arthroplasty?
When the hip joint is worn out or damaged, the head of the femur (ball) and the acetabulum (socket) are replaced with a prosthesis. Your surgeon will explain the different types of prostheses and discuss with you which option is most suitable for you. This operation is called a total hip replacement or total hip arthroplasty. The goal of the surgery is to reduce pain and improve mobility.

Over the past year, the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux has undertaken initiatives to develop and implement Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) clinical pathways across all healthcare institutions in Québec.
Ultimately, ERAS aims to improve patients’ overall experience and support a faster return to their daily activities following surgery.
