Recommendations on mammography and COVID‑19 vaccination
A mammogram should be performed before receiving the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine or six weeks after receiving one of the doses. If you wish to have a mammogram and have been vaccinated or plan to be vaccinated, it’s important to inform the screening centre when booking your appointment.

--------------
After benign axillary lymph nodes were discovered in some women recently vaccinated against COVID-19, the Canadian Society of Breast Imaging (CSBI) and the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) issued the following recommendations to avoid unnecessary concern:
- If possible, schedule your screening mammogram before receiving a vaccine dose or six weeks after one of the two vaccine doses.
- It is recommended that you not delay a mammogram if you’ve noticed recent changes in your breasts or if your scheduled screening mammogram is overdue because of delays caused by the pandemic.
- If you’ve had a partial mastectomy or removal of lymph nodes in the armpit, if you have post-treatment lymphedema or if you’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer and are awaiting treatment, it’s recommended that you consider receiving the vaccine in the arm on the unaffected side or in the thighs.
If you have questions about this, you can discuss them with your doctor or your nurse practitioner.
