Youth foster family
A foster family (family-type resource) is a living environment where one or two people welcome into their primary residence one or more children experiencing difficulties who are placed by a public institution in order to meet their needs and provide living conditions that are as close as possible to those of a natural family environment.
Becoming a foster family means dedicating time and energy to a child or adolescent and providing them with care, affection and attention. It also means offering them a calm, safe, stable, warm and stimulating living environment in the short, medium or long term.

Who can become a foster family?
Today, foster families take many different forms: a single person or single-parent family, a family or a couple who agree to welcome children or adolescents into their home. They decide to offer their services to host and support one or more children whose situation is primarily handled by the Direction de la protection de la jeunesse of the CISSS du Bas-Saint-Laurent.
Why become a youth foster family?
Foster families are essential partners in ensuring a child’s protection and development when their family is temporarily or permanently unable to do so.
Role and responsibilities of a foster family
By becoming a foster family, you commit to providing each child with a stable living environment that protects them and supports their development. Your role also includes helping young people, particularly those experiencing behavioural difficulties, develop personal and social skills, and the ability to adapt and integrate responsibly into their environment.
Overview of the steps
- Complete the online expression of interest form or contact our team.
- Participate in an information meeting.
- Take part in the evaluation process (individual interviews, couple interviews, family interviews, home visits).
The process also examines applicants’ motivation, personal qualities, parenting skills, intervention skills, interpersonal abilities and their ability to collaborate positively with a team of professionals as well as with the child’s biological parents. Management and organizational skills are also considered, along with the surroundings and physical characteristics of the living environment.
