Foster families
A foster family (family-type resource) is a living environment where one or two people house one or several children in difficulty entrusted to them by a public institution, to respond to their needs in a setting that is as close as possible to their natural living environment. To find out more about foster families.
Rehabilitation centres for young people with adjustment difficulties
If psychosocial and rehabilitation interventions in the natural living environment don’t improve the situation, the support worker must reassess the needs of the youth and the family. Based on this assessment, the decision may be to remove the youth from their natural living environment. This is a last-resort decision. Choosing this direction for the youth is a decisive step for the youth and their family. It’s crucial that they clearly understand the objective of this intervention and the importance of their contribution to the various interventions carried out during this process.
Removing a youth from their natural living environment must be part of ongoing psychosocial services provided to the youth and their family. Depending on the youth’s needs, there are various levels of supervision.
The youth learns to develop their potential in terms of their ability to adjust, learn, maintain relationships and take responsibility for their choices. Introducing new responsibilities is an opportunity to develop functional autonomy and increase their capacity for social integration.
The interventions require the involvement of the family, the various partners and the community resources.
The CISSS du Bas-Saint-Laurent’s residential rehabilitation services for youth serve young people aged 5 to 17 who have been placed under the ARGHSSS, the YPA and the YCJA and, sometimes, youth over the age of 18 under the YCJA. These services are offered in eight territories. The rehabilitation units and group homes offer levels of supervision based on:
- age
- gender
- the child’s needs
- the legal framework

Rehabilitation units and group homes
The rehabilitation units and group homes are distributed across the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. Each living environment is adapted to the person’s age, gender and the level of supervision required. The coordinator will determine the living environment best suited to the youth’s profile and intervention plan.
